God's Name(s)

God has many names in Judaism. Kabbalah says there are even 72 names! Names matter deeply. They reveal essence, convey power, and offer connection. While “God” may be a single word in English, the Jewish understanding of the Divine is far more layered, mystical, and nuanced. The Torah alone uses multiple names for God—each one highlighting a different facet of the Divine: justice, mercy, presence, mystery.

God's many names are used in meditation, prayer, and contemplation. Some see them as spiritual technology—ways of tuning into the Divine presence within and beyond us. Others interpret them more metaphorically, as poetic representations of the many ways God shows up in the world and in our lives.
