Distant/Abstract
A "distant/abstract" relationship with God is characterized by a sense that God is not a personal or directly involved figure, but rather a universal force, presence, or principle that exists in the background of life. This relationship often feels more conceptual than personal; God is understood as an idea, a spark in the universe, or a metaphor that represents love, harmony, or a higher power. People with this relationship may not picture a “guy in the sky” or a being who intervenes in individual lives, but instead feel a subtle, indirect, or symbolic connection to something beyond themselves.
Though God may not be a constant focus, individuals may reach out to this force in moments of stillness, difficulty, or gratitude, finding comfort or inspiration in the idea of a presence that supports or motivates them. This relationship often acknowledges that the true nature of God is unknowable or beyond human understanding, yet still holds value as a way to find meaning, guidance, or a sense of connection to the larger universe.

Below are responses that fell into the "distant/abstract" category alone.
"Always with me, but rarely present"
"Not sure I think of it in terms of a relationship since I don’t picture a 'guy in the sky'"
"I use G-d as a metaphor but also a sort of spark in the universe I can direct praise and gratitude and anguish towards"
"God is something that I choose to acknowledge in my life. I think that God is a force throughout the universe that people can notice. I don’t necessarily pray to God rather than just out into the universe."
"God is the love that keeps the world together"
"I honestly don’t think about God often"
"As a powerful force that partially controls my destiny and who is the creator of all things."
"Mystical, esoteric"
"I don’t believe we can communicate directly or even understand the nature of God but I believe in listening to God nonetheless and following my moral impulses which I think draw from God."
Distant/Abstract and...
Below are responses that were categorized as "distant/abstract" and a second category.
Complex/Ambiguous
"More distant these days than it used to be. It bothers me, but I am not sure how to change it."
Cultural/Communal/Historical
"It's ingrained in my upbringing. Not exactly a relationship but a belief in a concept."
Emotional/Experiential
"Wanting to be closer to the divine and really hoping she intervenes but that I have make the best choices with what I have"
Evolving
"I'm still figuring it out. I lean towards pantheism/panentheism"
Philosophical
I think that just existing is being in relationship with the universe/god. I don't see God as a being I can pick up the phone and call.
Relational/Personal
"God is an abstract yet close presence, genderless and formless, who motivates me to improve myself and the world and who supports and guides me in times of trouble and uncertainty."
Ritualistic
"A force I try to connect with in my prayers and actions"
Skeptical/Doubt/Non-Belief
"God is beyond human comprehension and even if he/she/they/it does exist, they have zero impact on day-to-day human existence or choices"
Theodicy/Trauma
“Whatever God is, it doesn’t step in when it matters most.”
If you feel like you have a distant/abstract relationship with God, experiment with one practice that invites personal language, such as speaking gratitude aloud or writing a letter to “the force” you believe in, and notice what shifts (or doesn’t). Even small experiments in personal prose can test whether distance is a theological conviction or simply a habit, and may reveal dimensions of connection you haven’t explored.
